Eyeliner is made to give depth and definition to your eyes. It can make your entire look change drastically or add a subtle hint of definition. Here are a few pointers on choosing between the different types of eyeliner, as well as a little help on picking out a color that will make your eyes stand out.
Four different kinds of eyeliner
Liquid
- Harder to master, usually requires a bit of practice
- Most cases it lasts longer than pencil and powder
- It gives you a more classic look
- Usually a matte finish
- The felt tip liquid liner is more easily applied than with a small brush
- Sometimes the liquid liner can appear to be “cracked” and flake away
Recommended liquid eyeliner:

Pencil
- Not known for lasting as long as other methods
- By far the easiest type of eyeliner to apply
- It gives you the option of "smudging" to create a smoky effect
- Relatively inexpensive
- Requires a sharpener
Recommended pencil eyeliner:
Chanel Le Crayon Kohl
Pot eyeliners
- A cross between liquid and pencil
- They are applied with a specific makeup brush
- Probably the hardest to master
- Usually lasts the longest out of all four types
Recommended pot eyeliner:
MAC Fluidline
Powder eyeliners
- They are applied with a makeup brush
- Not too hard to master, easier than pot or liquid
- They normally last awhile
- Colors may begin to look washed out as the day goes by

Brown eyes – Black, deep browns, dark blue and plum.
Blue eyes – Browns, dark grays, and a soft black.
Green eyes – Light and deep browns, soft to medium black.
