Getting the Perfect Blush

Posted by Casey on August 23, 2007 In Articles > Shopping 7 comments

Natural looking blush will brighten your appearance. It takes away the washed out, pale look and makes you look more awake and well rested. I also love the look of dramatic blush; it looks amazing when it's applied skillfully.

Powder

Powder blush is the easiest to apply and is known for long lasting color. It's good for humid days because it tends to stay in place in hot weather.

Best for: oily or combination skin types

Advice for application:

  • Use a large brush, that's full and soft, like a powder brush, only smaller
  • Swirl the brush around, and tap off the excess powder to start with a sheer layer
  • Apply the blush on the apples of cheeks, and sweep outward in a circular motion

Cream

Cream blush offers a soft, lit-from-within finish. It's good for blotchy or uneven skin because it blends so easily. Cream blushes help avoid a dusty look, so they're great for more mature skin.

Best for: dry or mature skin types

Advice for application:

  • Lightly dot the apples of your cheeks with the cream blush and let it melt into your skin
  • Blend outward in small dabs in a circular motion until the outline is gone
  • If it's too sheer you can repeat the process until its dramatic enough

Stain/Gel

Stains are the trickiest to apply, but they're the best option for natural-looking flushed cheeks. Since they actually stain your skin, they look best on even skin tones. Stains and gels are the longest lasting blushes.

Best for: oily to normal skin types

Advice for application:

  • Place a small dot of product on your finger and blend quickly
  • If you take too long, you might end up with uneven, patchy color

Mousse

Mousse has a forgiving texture; it applies like a cream, but finishes like a powder. It can be applied on top of liquid or powder foundation.

Best for: oily skin

Advice for application:

  • Similar to cream blush
  • Use a small drop of mousse on fingers or a brush
  • If you use a brush, make sure it's one that's made for cream products

Tips

  • Always blend your edges
  • Check your blush in natural light
  • When in doubt, less is best
  • If you applied too much blush, go over it with some powder
  • Make sure your blush is balanced with your eye and lip makeup
  • Keep your skin well hydrated
